Maryville College has been recognized for its commitment to helping undergraduate students learn, grow and succeed by Colleges of Distinction, a unique guide for college-bound students. MC has been named a 2022-23 College of Distinction and a Tennessee College of Distinction.

This recognition marks the 11th consecutive year that Maryville College has been named a College of Distinction for being committed to engaged, hands-on education that focuses on student success and satisfaction.

Colleges of Distinction, now in its 22nd year, is a college guide that believes that a thorough selection process requires more than an overview of institutional data, statistics and size of endowment. Instead, the Colleges of Distinction selection process comprises a sequence of in-depth research and detailed interviews with the schools, accepting only those that adhere to the “Four Distinctions” – engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes. These principles are all informed by the “High-Impact Practices (HIPs)” to prioritize the ways that institutions enable students to have a fulfilling, individualized college experience both inside and outside of the classroom.

Maryville College also received special recognition for career development, business, education, military support and nursing. Colleges of Distinction offered the following reasons for recognizing these five MC programs and student support initiatives:

  • Business: Globalization and the intricacies of modern business operations require effective communication and apt problem-solving strategies. Maryville College’s programs in finance/accounting, human resource management, international business, marketing and management keep future leaders adaptable as they grow alongside their industry.
  • Career Development: Few questions are going to be on students’ minds more often than some version of “What am I going to do after graduation?” Schools awarded the Career Development badge have shown that they are well equipped to help their students graduate with confidence. Offering such resources as the Maryville College Career Center and Maryville College Works (a career preparation program integrated into the curriculum), Maryville College provides unparalleled support throughout every stage of career exploration, development and application.
  • Education: Maryville College delivers leading-edge undergraduate education programs as education transforms alongside constant changes in technology, public policy, employer demands and more. Maryville College graduates future educators who are not only knowledgeable, but also efficient mentors who provide empathetic support and novel teaching methods. Maryville College’s Division of Education is geared to meet the unique demands of its students and prepare them for successful careers in their respective disciplines. Maryville College also offers 11 teacher licensure tracks across grade levels.
  • Military Support: As the number of veterans pursuing higher education increases, so too does the demand for their personal and academic support. Veterans can be some of the most dedicated, hard-working and capable students on a college campus, but the unique challenges they face can impede their success. Maryville College has been selected as a stand-out institution dedicated to helping veterans overcome their obstacles and achieve success.
  • Nursing: Maryville College excels at graduating students into the workforce with solid, well-developed critical thinking skills as well as the ability to adapt in an ever-changing society. The accredited dual-degree nursing/health care program at Maryville College allows students to get the best of both worlds: a liberal arts education combined with a robust clinical-based professional nursing program through Tennessee Wesleyan University. Through the program, students are challenged to remain curious and compassionate throughout their rigorous practice.

“When we focus all of our attention on how schools stack up against one another, we lose track of what really matters: the students themselves,” said Wes Creel, founder of Colleges of Distinction. “Every student has individual needs and their own environment in which they’re most likely to thrive. We want to extend our praise to the schools that prioritize and cater to students’ goals.”

Creel said that Maryville College’s inclusion is informed by the unique ways it commits to achieving success, and the effective strategies for student satisfaction and outcomes were the kinds of engaging experiences found at Maryville College.

“We’re inspired by the ways in which Maryville College immerses students in their fields, all while fostering a welcoming community that will support them through and beyond their college years.”
